Events in Chronological Order

Christmas Eve Service

While making your holiday plans, include our Christmas Eve candle lighting service which will be held at 6:00 PM in the sanctuary. Join us as we gather together to celebrate Christ’s birth.

Quaker Ridge Camp

The Quaker Ridge Camp Board invites you to a discussion time on January 3, at 10:00 AM in room 202. Is there a decision or action you don’t understand or you disagree with? Come and visit with the board and staff and let’s talk. Everyone is welcome.

Friends Disaster Service

We are planning January 5-9 as the next week to work in south Texas for the Hurricane Ike relief. We will be scheduling weeks once a month for as long as the work holds out. We have a list of folks who need help, so there is plenty of work. Look over your schedules and let us know if you are available.

Who’s up for it? If you can help, let us know as soon as possible so we can have a count of those staying at the Friendswood Friends Church. Please contact Doug Holcombe at sdholcombe@juno.com.

A Plea to God

The prophet Isaiah was worried about his people. They were ignoring God. Their hearts were hardened. "We have long been," he wrote, "like those whom you do not rule, like those not called by your name" (63:19).

Isaiah felt that they had only one hope: The invasion of God in such a dramatic fashion that no one could ignore the earth shaking event of his presence. He prayed to God: "O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence...to make your name known...so that the nations might tremble at your presence" (Isaiah 64:1-2).

Did God answer the prayer? Not precisely as Isaiah had requested. But God did offer hope for Isaiah and his people. God said: "As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem....It shall be known that the hand of the Lord is with his servants..." (Isaiah 66:13-14).

When the troubles of the world seem insurmountable, we may wish, as Isaiah did, for God to "tear open the heavens and come down." But God’s greatest revelation did not come in such a dramatic way. It was in the quiet birth of a little baby born to a common couple in a small town where no rooms were available. Yet that baby turned out to be the most unique person to ever walk the earth. That child was and is the hope of the world - Jesus Christ.

Prayer for hope

You once told the prophet Isaiah

that those who hoped in you

would have wings of eagles.

Things are getting me down, Lord.

I need those wings

and I’m not the only one.

With them, I can never completely fall

and the world stands to gain

by the perseverance I urgently seek.

Amen

Richard Armstrong

For Your Information

The 2009 Officers’ and Committees’ list

The 2009 Officers’ and Committees’ list has been posted on the bulletin board by the water fountain in the church foyer. There is still opportunity for ministry as a committee person. If you have an interest, please talk to Ben Anthony (303-433-1132) or Connie Chambers (303-237-1044).

Kids say the darndest things!

As a Sunday School teacher, I have enjoyed sharing God’s Word with young children and hearing their own special perspective. There is something beautiful about witnessing spiritual formation in young children. We have a wonderful staff of teachers here at FDFC who would agree. However, we also have a need for more teachers during 1st hour on Sunday mornings. Our Kindergarten and 1st and 2nd grade classes are understaffed. Would you prayerfully consider joining this ministry? If so, please contact the church office or Linda Kind at 303-237-4181. Thanks.

Rocky Mountain tapestries

There are Rocky Mountain tapestries available at $25.00 each. Contact Connie Chambers (303-237-1044) if you want to buy one (or more). Great gift idea!

Missions' Shares Forms

It is not too late to turn in your missionary Shares form. There are more forms on the library table in the church foyer. You can fill one out and place it in the offering Sunday morning or mail it to the church office. This information helps missionaries plan for 2009.

Birthday update

If I do not have your birthday on the birthday list, please e-mail me at firstdenverfrie1@qwestoffice.net or call the church office and I will add you to the list.

Volleyball

On Monday evenings at 6:45, co-ed volleyball is played in the church gym. Anyone high school age and older is welcome to play.

Parking Lot

The church parking lot is now restricted to attendees of First Denver Friends Church. If you need to leave your car in the parking lot while you go with a church group over night, or for any other reason, please let the church office know so your car will not be towed. We will give you a placard to put on the dash of your car.

We have to restrict the usage of our lot due to too many neighbors using our parking lot and then our not having enough space for our attendees.

Did you know?

If you go to our website you can send reminders to yourself or to someone else from the events calendar. Go to our website at www.firstdenverfriendschurch.org. Once you are on our home page, click on the "Event Calendar" button on the left side of the page. When the calendar comes up, double click on any event. A screen will then come up letting you send a reminder to someone else, or to yourself. It’s a pretty cool feature! Try it out. Never miss that event or meeting again!

Worship Service tapes and CD's

In effort to better provide for our recording needs, tapes and CD’s of Sunday morning services are now available by REQUEST ONLY. A long clipboard has been placed on the sanctuary sound desk. Write down your name and the date of the service, and we will attempt to get you a recording within one week.

CANS for Camp

In preparation for the 2008 Quaker Ridge Camp season, Friends Women are again collecting aluminum cans. Please bring your rinsed/crushed cans to the church. Friends Women will collect them and turn them in for cash. The funds will be used for camp scholarships. If you have any questions, please call Teri Lane.

For Hire

In the office, we often have church members call and ask us if we know of anyone in the church who does a particular job such as plumbing, electrical, computer work, Tupperware, etc. Often, we don't know who does what for sure. This way, if you own your own business or do a particular type of work, we can list you on the "For Hire" web page and let people know what you do. If you would like to be listed on this page, please e-mail or call the church office.
